FAO is a United Nations specialized agency. Agriculture, livestock, food systems, nutrition, and climate change are among the areas where the organization provides technical help and support to Afghanistan. The FAO’s mission is to ensure that everyone has access to enough high-quality food on a regular basis so that they may live active, healthy lives.
Since 1949, Afghanistan has been a member of the FAO. FAO has had a full-fledged presence in Afghanistan since 2002, working to rehabilitate irrigation infrastructure, build new dairy and wheat seed industries, improve livestock health, assist smallholders in diversifying their crops and adding higher-value products, stem deforestation, and assist the country in mitigating and adapting to climate change, among other things.
FAO Afghanistan is investing in resilience-building actions across all 34 provinces, with a focus on protecting agriculture livelihoods and local ecosystems, increasing local production of nutritious foods and cash incomes, and safeguarding critical agriculture sectoral development gains made over the last two decades by revitalizing rural markets and economies.
